2014-05-14 · It turns out the woman in the portrait was Marthe de Florian, who had lived in the abandoned apartment back in the 1890s. A love letter from Boldini to de Florian confirmed the painting’s provenance and a record-setting auction followed. Marthe de Florian’s apartment in Paris, abandoned by her descendants in 1940, reopened in 2010.

These documents reveal that she was more than a renowned courtesan with enviable decolletage. Her name was Mathilde Héloïse Beaugiron, but she is better known as Madame Marthe de Florian. Although Boldini was born in Ferrara, Italy in 1842, by 1871, he had settled in Paris where he would reach his peak of creativity and would become one of the best-known Italian painters. Above the mantel was a magnificent painting of the original owner, a courtesan named Marthe de Florian, by the 19th-century painter Giovanni Boldini.
