Briefly discusses carboxylic acid derivative reactivity then gives line reactions for reactions forming amides including dehydration of carboxylate ammonium

ABSTRACT: A general method for the synthesis of amides involving the direct coupling of alkali metal carboxylate salts with amines is described. Amidation of a wide variety of carboxylate salts with either free amines or their ammonium hydrochloride salts can be achieved using HBTU as a coupling agent in combination with Hünig ’s base. 2013-07-15 · Although typical metal amides are recognized as strong stoichiometric bases for deprotonation of inert or less acidic hydrogen atoms, transition-metal amides, namely silver and copper amides, show interesting abilities as one of the simplest acid/base catalysts in stereoselective carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions. Vinyl cations derived from diazo ketones participate in transition-metal-free C–H insertion reactions, but the corresponding amide and ester analog exhibit divergent reactivity profiles. Whereas cations formed from diazo ketones undergo a rearrangement and C–H insertion sequence, those from diazo amides do so less efficiently and tend to be competitively trapped before the insertion step occurs. Both the gas chromatographic examination and X-ray diffraction measurement indicated that the reaction between alkali or alkaline earth metal hydride MH x (such as LiH, NaH, MgH 2 and CaH 2) and gaseous NH 3 could quickly proceed at room temperature by ball milling and the corresponding metal amides were easily synthesized in high quality.

Amide Socl2 Mechanism. Metal amides (systematic name metal azanides) are a class of coordination compounds composed of a metal center with amide ligands of the form NR 2−. Amide ligands have two electron pairs available for bonding. In principle, they can be terminal or bridging. In these two examples, the dimethylamido ligands are both bridging and terminal: Metal-catalyzed amide bond forming reactions in an environmentally friendly aqueous medium: nitrile hydrations and beyond Rocío García-Álvarez, Pascale Crochet * and Victorio Cadierno * Laboratorio de Compuestos Organometálicos y Catálisis (Unidad Asociada al CSIC), Departamento de Química Orgánica e Inorgánica.

Metal amides reactions

Amides undergo many chemical reactions, although they are less reactive than esters. Amides hydrolyse in hot alkali as well as in strong acidic conditions. Acidic conditions yield the carboxylic acid and the ammonium ion while basic hydrolysis yield the carboxylate ion and ammonia. An indirect method of hydrolyzing some amides utilizes nitrous acid.
